Ouagadougou runs on rivalry between clubs tied to the state's own institutions, and USFA belongs to the army: the Union Sportive des Forces Armées has carried the Burkinabè military's colours since 1962, playing under a string of earlier names — ASFAV, ASFAN, ASFAP among them — before the current one stuck. Supporters call the team Les Bidasses, the draftees, a nickname that outlasted every rebrand.

The seven league titles run in clusters rather than a steady line: three in a row at the turn of the 1970s, then a gap until 1984, then another wait before 1998 and 2000 brought back-to-back championships alongside the SuperCup. The Coupe du Faso has been kinder in recent years, with wins in 2010 and 2015 sitting well apart from the club's first, in 1968.

Aristide Bancé is the name most associated with the club's better sides, though USFA's continental record stopped well short of matching his profile elsewhere — a second-round exit in the 1997 CAF Cup remains the club's high-water mark outside Burkina Faso.

The Stade de l'USFA holds 9,000, modest even by the standards of the capital, and matches against ASFA Yennenga or Étoile Filante are folded into the general run of Ouaga derbies rather than marked out as a fixture of their own. As of the 2025–26 season the club sat second in the Premier League.
