Carlos Coronel

Carlos Coronel arrived at São Paulo FC in January 2026 as a free agent with dual Brazilian and Paraguayan citizenship, a status he formalised in July 2023 when he obtained a Paraguayan passport through his mother's family line. He was born in Corumbá, in Mato Grosso do Sul, but grew up in Porto Murtinho, on the border with Paraguay.

His career began in the Red Bull system, first in the Red Bull Brasil academy and then, from 2015, at FC Liefering, where he made 67 appearances in Austria's 2. Liga before graduating to Red Bull Salzburg's first team. At Salzburg, Coronel won the Austrian Bundesliga three times and the Austrian Cup twice, though first-team opportunities were limited to seven league appearances. Loan spells took him to the United States, first with Philadelphia Union in 2019 and then with New York Red Bulls in 2021. Coronel established himself in MLS, making 169 league appearances for the Red Bulls and keeping 13 clean sheets in his first season there. He was a finalist for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021.

Coronel made his debut for Paraguay in September 2023 in a World Cup qualifier against Peru and has since earned nine caps. He travelled with the squad to the 2024 Copa América but did not play, with Rodrigo Morínigo preferred in goal. At São Paulo, he made his official debut in April 2026, in a goalless draw against Millonarios in the Copa Sul-Americana, signing a contract that runs until the end of 2028.
