Roberto Júnior Fernández Torres

Roberto Júnior Fernández Torres, better known as 'Gatito' Fernández, came through the youth ranks at Cerro Porteño before making his first-team debut in 2007. Three loan spells followed — to Estudiantes de La Plata, Racing Club and FC Utrecht — before he settled back at Cerro Porteño, where he won the Paraguayan Primera División in 2009 and again in 2013.

A move to Brazil in 2014 took him to Vitória, then Figueirense, before he joined Botafogo on a free transfer in 2017. Across 222 competitive appearances, he became a key figure in the club's rise, winning the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the Série B title in 2021, the Campeonato Carioca in 2018, and the Taça Rio in both 2023 and 2024. In 2024 he was named Best Goalkeeper of the Copa do Brasil and picked up the Troféu EFE Brasil.

He returned to Cerro Porteño on a free transfer in January 2025, making his debut in that year's Apertura against Libertad. He went on to win the Primera División Clausura and the Supercopa Paraguay with the club that year.

Fernández has earned 31 caps for the Paraguay senior side. He was an unused substitute when Paraguay finished runners-up at the 2011 Copa América, then established himself as first-choice goalkeeper at the 2019 tournament, where he was named Man of the Match in all four of his appearances. He has also represented Paraguay at Under-20 level and played for the Olympic team at the 2024 Paris Games, and he was named in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a backup goalkeeper.
