«Monsters of the Midway»
An Illinois food-starch company, A.E. Staley, put together a football team in Decatur in 1919 to advertise its business. The club moved to Chicago in 1921 as the Chicago Staleys, and when George Halas and Dutch Sternaman took over ownership the following year, they renamed it the Chicago Bears.
Halas's team took the NFL championship eight times before the Super Bowl era began, including a 73–0 rout of Washington in 1940. The wait for a Super Bowl ran until the 1985 season, when the Bears beat the New England Patriots 46–10 in Super Bowl XX; a second appearance, against the Indianapolis Colts after the 2006 season, ended in defeat.
Grange's arrival drew crowds professional football had not seen before and gave the sport a legitimacy it had struggled to earn on its own.
