Engineers

Karlsruhe runs on its technical university, and the American football club that grew out of it never pretended otherwise. The Engineers started in 1990 as a side for students at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, a way for people studying engineering to play American football. It stayed that way until August 2013, when the team folded into the wider KIT Sport Club and opened up to players with no university tie at all.

What the club has done best, over three and a half decades, is win the German university championship. Ten titles belong to the Engineers, spread from 1996 to 2018. Between 2009 and 2013 they shared that work with the Badener Greifs before going it alone again.

The climb through the regular league pyramid came later and came fast: promoted out of the Bezirksliga, then through the Landesliga in 2014 and the Oberliga in 2015, they reached the Regionalliga Südwest in 2016. Games there put the Engineers against sides like the Neckar Hammers of Heidelberg and the Offenburg Miners.

Home games are played at the Sparda Sportpark, a ground that holds 1,000 — enough for a university club, and a fair reflection of the scale the Engineers still operate at. Green remains the colour on the shirt, the one constant through the climb from student pitch to regional football.

The Engineers enter this season as reigning Regionalliga Südwest champions, having taken the title in 2025.
