«Dirty Birds»
The Falcons have shared their division with the New Orleans Saints since 1967.
What Atlanta has never managed is a Super Bowl. The franchise, put together in 1965 when Rankin M. Smith Sr. paid $8.5 million rather than let the city join the rival American Football League, has reached the final twice and lost both times: to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII, then to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI, where a 28–3 lead in the second half slipped away in overtime. That gap has made the Falcons the oldest team in the four major American leagues still without a title.
The name itself came from a schoolteacher, Julia Elliott of Griffin, Georgia, who won a public contest to christen the new club, and the "Dirty Birds" nickname followed decades later. The list of franchise leaders points mostly to one era: Matt Ryan threw for 59,735 yards in Atlanta colours, more than anyone else who has worn the uniform.
Home games now run through the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, built to hold 71,000 for football.
