«Oilers»
The Astrodome, seating around 50,000 for football even as the building could pack in far more for other events, was a new venue when the Oilers moved in. Before that, the club had shuttled between Jeppesen Stadium and Rice Stadium.
The Oilers came into being in 1960 as one of the original members of the American Football League, and Bud Adams ran the club from that first season until its final one in Houston. The early years produced the team's only championships: back-to-back AFL titles in 1960 and 1961, both won against the Los Angeles Chargers, before Dallas beat them to a third in 1962.
Under Bum Phillips in the late 1970s, the team reached three straight AFC Championship games and never got past them, losing twice to the Pittsburgh Steelers and once to the San Diego Chargers.
Adams pulled the franchise out of Houston in 1996 over a dispute about renovating the stadium, and it played on as the Tennessee Oilers before taking the Titans name.
