Yaroslavl, Mariupol, Camaragibe, Russia
Formerly: Dinamo, Khimik (Yaroslavl); Novator, Illichivets (Mariupol); none (Camaragibe)
Shinnik Stadium in Yaroslavl stands as a relic of a different sporting era. The ground sits on 3 Truda Square, holding 22,990 spectators. The pitch itself is natural grass, reinforced with synthetic fibres added in 2020 to handle the heavy wear of local football.
The venue has a history of hosting significant knockout matches, including the 2011 Russian Cup Final. It also served as a base for European competition, most notably during the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1998 and 2004.
The Mariupol ground, once known as Novator, was destroyed during the 2022 invasion and no longer exists. The Brazilian venue in Camaragibe is a modest municipal arena with a capacity of roughly 2,000, far removed from the scale of its Russian counterpart.
Back in Yaroslavl, the stadium remains a functioning, if somewhat weathered, fixture. The pitch cut up badly during wet seasons, a common complaint among visiting sides who found the surface uneven compared to modern artificial alternatives. The stands have seen better days, but they still fill up for local derbies.
It is not a place for luxury, nor is it a temple of football. It is simply a place where games are played, with a history that dates back to when the local team was called Khimik. The atmosphere is defined by the proximity of the crowd to the action, rather than sweeping views. The stadium fell silent after narrow defeats and erupted after last-minute winners, a routine that has not changed since the 1950s.
