Jalen Duren, Pistons close gap in contract talks

Sam Amick reports the financial gap between the Pistons and restricted free agent Jalen Duren has narrowed since early summer, though a deal isn't guaranteed yet.

The gap between Jalen Duren and the Pistons over a new contract has narrowed, according to The Athletic's Sam Amick.

Detroit's opening offer to the restricted free agent centre was a five-year deal worth around $35 million per season. Duren's side had been asking for more than $40 million. Amick said that gap has closed since the start of the summer, though he stopped short of predicting how the talks end.

Both sides have an incentive to settle. A qualifying offer of $9.6 million would make Duren an unrestricted free agent next summer, an outcome Amick described as a "nuclear option" for both players and teams.
