Stephen Curry: Warriors still believe they can win the title

Stephen Curry says the Golden State Warriors still believe they can win the championship, but that the team has to work out what a title side looks like now.

Asked whether the Warriors have all the elements to contend, and why, Curry said: "Yes, of course. We always have high standards, a high bar and big expectations. You can ask me, ask Steve Kerr, ask Draymond [Green] – we all still believe we can be that championship team. I think our main task now is to rethink how exactly that should look."

He described the squad as experienced. "We have a veteran team. We need to stay healthy, there is no doubt about that. At the same time we have young guys who are ready to come in and contribute."

Curry named three of them: "Yaxel [Lendeborg], our draft pick. B.P. [Brandin Podziemski], who I hope will take another step forward. Melt [De'Anthony Melton], coming back from a serious injury two years ago and getting his confidence back."

On style, he said: "We want to keep the stability of our signature way of playing, but we also have to adapt the talent we have to it in order to reach the highest level. In short, if I answer at length – yes, we believe, but we need to rethink the look of this team."

"You can't just roll the ball out onto the floor and say: 'Oh, we're the Warriors, we'll win.' No, you have to take on the challenge and work out what this particular team needs to do to win. And as long as Draymond, Steve and I are around, I think we will all share this mentality."

This may mean the Warriors go into the season depending heavily on the availability of Curry, Green and Kerr, with Lendeborg, Podziemski and Melton expected to take on part of the load. If one of the three misses time, the approach Curry describes would be tested early.
