Bingöl Şehir Stadyumu holds three thousand people, but it has been the setting for three promotions in little more than a decade. The club came together in 2012 as Çapakçurspor, taking its first name from the old district of Bingöl, and won the city's amateur league in its very first season. Two years later it was renamed 12 Bingölspor.

Promotion to the Bölgesel Amatör Lig came quickly, and in 2015–2016 the club beat Araklı Karaderespor 1–0 in a playoff to reach the TFF 3. Lig for the first time. Two seasons there ended in relegation, and 12 Bingölspor spent nine years working its way back through the amateur ranks before the group title in 2024–2025 returned it to the third tier. It did not stay long: a 4–0 win over Türk Metal 1963 Spor last season took the 2. Group championship and, with it, a first place in the TFF 2. Lig.

Locally the team is known as the Green-Whites, and its derby against Genç Muratspor carries the weight of a small city watching itself compete. The squad has leaned on academy graduates sent out on loan or signed after release from bigger clubs — Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, Antalyaspor among them — rather than on marquee signings.
