Albatro

Syracuse's handball tradition ran through Ortigia Siracusa, three times Italian champions before the club folded in 2002. Albatro, founded in 1994, absorbed what was left of that inheritance and has spent the following decades rebuilding it from Serie B upward: three promotions from Serie A2, in 2004-2005, 2012-2013 and 2019-2020.

In Serie A Gold the ceiling has mostly been third place, reached in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. What changed the club's standing came later and elsewhere: in 2026, at Riccione, Albatro beat Pallamano Trieste 27-24 to take the Coppa Italia, the first national trophy for a Syracuse club since Ortigia's Coppa Italia wins three decades earlier. The PalaAkradina holds a few hundred people, and when EHF inspectors ruled it unfit for continental fixtures in 2025-2026, Albatro had to take its European Cup ties to Agrigento instead, where Olympiacos ended the run in the second round.

Hazem Mamdouh has carried the scoring load in the most recent campaign. But the fixture that matters most in Syracuse is local: Pallamano Aretusa, re-founded in 2018 by people who came out of the old Ortigia and Albatro sides.
