Bunyodkor go into the current Uzbekistan Super League season carrying the weight of a name that once meant automatic continental ambition, and a squad built to close the gap on the country's front-runners. The club plays its home matches at Milliy Stadium in Tashkent, 34,800 seats.
That era began with money. Rivaldo arrived and scored 43 goals between 2008 and 2010. The spending, and a partnership arrangement with Barcelona, earned Bunyodkor the nickname Osiyo Barselonasi — the Asian Barcelona — alongside the older, gentler Qaldirg'ochlar, the Swallows.
The results matched the outlay for a run of seasons: five league titles between 2008 and 2013, four domestic cups in the same stretch, and two Asian Champions League semi-finals, in 2008 and 2012. Server Djeparov, named Asia's best player in 2008, played through the club's peak years.
