Namangan sits in the Fergana Valley, and the city's football has run through one club. Navbahor started life in 1978 as Tekstilshchik, took the Navbahor name in 1980, spent a stretch as Avtomobilist, and settled back to Navbahor for good in 1992, the year it joined the newly independent Uzbek championship as a founding member. It has never dropped out of the top flight since.
The club's one league title came in 1996. Oleg Shatskikh had already topped the league's scoring charts the year before with 26, and went on to win 9 caps for Uzbekistan. Navbahor has not been champion again, but it has rarely been far off.
Among the forwards who carried the club between those trophies, Shukhrat Mirkholdirshoev stands apart: 140 goals in 171 appearances, including a league-topping 31 in 2004 alone.
