«Cardinals»
The 1947 championship remains the last time the Cardinals stood at the top of the league on their own merit. Their only other title, in 1925, came without a trophy earned on the field the same way — the league suspended the Pottsville Maroons and handed Chicago the crown instead. A rematch with the Eagles the following year went the other way, and no championship has followed since. The closest the franchise has come in the Super Bowl era was a single appearance after the 2008 season, when Pittsburgh beat them 27–23 in Super Bowl XLIII.
State Farm Stadium in Glendale has hosted the club since the move to Arizona. Seattle, San Francisco and the Rams supply the modern rivalry, though the Chicago Bears remain the oldest opponent on the schedule, a leftover from a city the Cardinals left decades ago.
That departure was only the second of two. The franchise started out in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club on Chicago's South Side, well before there was a league for it to join, and carried the Chicago name into the NFL's founding in 1920. St. Louis took the team in for nearly three decades starting in 1960 before Arizona became home in 1988, first as the Phoenix Cardinals and then, from 1994, under the name it carries now.
