Valparaíso builds its identity on hills and a working port, and few institutions there carry the city's Italian immigrant imprint as plainly as Sociedad Sportiva Italiana. Basketball is where that imprint shows most: the women's team has turned into the dominant force in the national game, a status the club's founders in February 1917 could not have planned for when they set up a multi-sport society rather than a single team.

The record does the talking. Sportiva Italiana has taken the Liga Nacional Femenina title in 2016, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 — several of those years split into Apertura and Clausura wins — and added the 2026 Apertura on top. No other club in Chilean women's basketball has matched that run. In 2024 the team also reached the Final Four of the Women's Basketball League Americas.

Fans call them las chicas de Sportiva, and they play in red and white at the Polideportivo Municipal de Valparaíso, known locally as Fortín Prat. Head coach Gianluca Pozo has overseen the squad through the recent title stretch, with players such as Jovanka Ljubetić and Thiare García.

The ground holds 3,000 people, a modest number next to the trophies collected inside it.
