Studentski Centar began as a project of the Dom učenika i studenata Podgorica, the city's Student and Pupil Home, which set up the basketball side in 1997. For nearly two decades it worked mainly as a youth-development club, and it reached the top tier only after winning the Prva B Liga in 2015. Its nickname, Studenti, still points back to that founder.

The rise came in stages. The club won the ABA League Second Division in 2020–21, and that earned promotion to the ABA League First Division. In August 2021 the Slovenian company Rastoder became a sponsor, and since then the club is often called SC Derby. In 2022–23 it finished as runner-up in the Prva A Liga, and it has yet to win the championship.

On September 20, 2023, Studentski Centar beat Partizan 83–81 in the ABA League Supercup. Borna Kapusta hit the winning shot. In February 2024, the club met Budućnost VOLI in the Montenegrin Cup final. Budućnost had won the competition for a decade, and Studentski Centar won 81–80 in overtime for its first Cup. Matches between the two clubs are called the "Gradski derbi", the City Derby. Petar Mijović has coached the side since 2024.

Both clubs are in Podgorica, and Studentski Centar plays at the 6,000-seat Morača Sports Center. The blue and white of the students is worn there against the same rival in the same city.
