Handball only reached Târgu Jiu as a separate women's programme in 2017, when the city's multi-sport club, CSM Târgu Jiu, set up a dedicated section in Gorj County. Promotion followed the long way round: the side won Divizia A's second series in the 2021–22 season and stepped up into the Liga Națională, Romania's top flight, the following year.

They wasted little time settling in.

The squad has leaned increasingly on imports to sustain that level. French forward Amandine Balzinc spent the 2024/25 season in Gorj, and Spanish internationals Paulina Pérez Buforn and Aitana Santomé arrived together for the current campaign, alongside Germany's Sabine Klimek.
