Sibir Arena holds 11,650 for league games and can be stretched to 12,000 when the KHL brings its All-Star Game to Novosibirsk. The building gives the club a modern home to go with a name that has carried through several eras of Soviet and Russian hockey.

Long before the KHL existed, the club these teams formed had already won the RSFSR Championship three times, in 1949, 1953 and 1964, and the RSFSR Cup in 1953. It climbed the Soviet and then Russian league ladder from there, taking the First League in 1982-83 and the Vysshaya Liga, the second tier, in 1993 and 2002, before joining the KHL at its founding in 2008.

The KHL years have not brought a championship, but they gave Sibir their best modern run: the Chernyshev Division title in 2014-15, a season that carried them all the way to the Eastern Conference finals before Metallurg Magnitogorsk stopped them. Boris Barabanov remains the player supporters measure others against, 406 goals for the club, his number 9 now retired.

Every Sibir season still turns on the Siberian Derby against HC Avangard Omsk, the fixture where nothing else that happened that year matters once the puck drops.
