Nizhnekamsk grew up around the petrochemical complex that gives the city its name, and it was the plant's own workers who put a hockey club together on 23 October 1968. The name has never changed since — Neftekhimik has stayed Neftekhimik and a 2017 rebrand that gave the crest a wolf's head and the team its "Volki" nickname, worn over colours that themselves shifted from the green of the Tatarstan flag to the blue, white and red used today.

The club has one league title to its name, the Vysshaya Liga championship of 1995, taken before the Kontinental Hockey League existed in its current form. Since joining the KHL, the deepest run has been a Conference Quarterfinal, reached first in 2009/10 against Salavat Yulaev and most recently in 2026. What Neftekhimik has produced more consistently is players: Nail Yakupov went first overall in the 2012 NHL draft out of the academy, Mikhail Sergachev left to win two Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay, and Damir Sharipzyanov took Olympic silver in 2022 having come through the same system. Dan Sexton did his scoring on the ice at the Neftekhim Arena itself, finishing as the club's leading points man of the KHL era.

Games against Ak Bars Kazan carry the weight of the Tatarstan Derby. Ownership sits with the parent company, Nizhnekamskneftekhim, the same petrochemical works that founded the team.
