AvtoVAZ put its name on the team in 1990, having run it since the mid-1970s under the Torpedo badge. The nickname stuck regardless: Avtozavodtsy, the auto-plant workers.

The club's peak sits entirely in the 1990s. Two national championships, in 1993/94 and 1995/96, were followed by a European Cup in 1996/97. A Continental Cup arrived in 2005/06, but the Kontinental Hockey League era has given Lada nothing beyond a pair of quarterfinal runs, in 2008/09 and 2023/24, either side of two spells back in the Higher Hockey League after financial trouble cost the club its top-flight place, first in 2010 and again in 2018.

Ilya Bryzgalov came through the same academy that has fed the senior roster for decades, and left it to win a Stanley Cup and a world title elsewhere — the pattern Lada has lived with more often than not, developing players it could not keep. Lada Arena holds a little over 6,000, small even by KHL standards, and the club plays there now as one of the league's smaller operations rather than the force it was under the old IHL.

Having returned to the KHL for the 2023/24 season, Lada's task is straightforward: stay there.
