Victor Hedman spent the 2012–13 NHL lockout in Astana, when the Astana City Council resolved to found one.
Barys built its identity in Russian hockey before it had any: the Ural-Western Siberia zone of the Pervaya Liga in 2004, promotion to the Vysshaya Liga in 2007, then, in 2008, a place as one of three founding foreign members of the newly formed KHL. Three Chernyshev Division titles followed, in 2013–14, 2018–19 and 2019–20.
The name itself carries the flag: Barys means Snow Leopard in Kazakh, the country's national animal, and the club wears navy blue, sky blue, gold and white in its honour.
