Amateur players in Khabarovsk formed a team called Zalp in 1957, and in 1966 the club was registered under the army's banner as SKA Khabarovsk.
The name changed twice more as the club adjusted to the new landscape — SKA-Amur through the 1990s, then simply Amur from 1998 — and it was under the SKA-Amur banner that the club won the Russian Higher League in 1995/96. Dmitri Tarasov's name sits atop the club's scoring lists, while goaltender Alexei Murygin is remembered as one of its own.
Orange runs through the identity too, a nod to the Amur tiger that gives the team its nickname.
