The rink opened on 18 December 1955, and the team took the ice that same day under the name Stroitel, tied to the construction trade rather than the furnaces. It became Metallurg in 1959, matching the city's growing steel plant, and only in 1994 took the name Severstal, after the company that now gives the club its identity and its nickname, the Steelworkers. Black and yellow have carried through the changes.

Severstal's high point in the top flight came in 2002–03, when the team reached the Russian Superleague final and lost to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, finishing runners-up. A bronze followed two seasons earlier. Further back, as Metallurg, the club topped the Soviet second tier in 1980–81, a result that reads modestly now but marked the step that eventually put Cherepovets among the country's recognised hockey towns.

Since the move into the KHL, the club has not matched that Superleague final; its deepest run came in 2012–13, when it reached the conference quarter-finals. Matches against Metallurg Magnitogorsk are billed as the Steel Derby, two clubs named for the same industry meeting with little affection between them.

Sergei Mikhaev was the coach behind the Superleague medals, and it is his name people in Cherepovets still bring up first when the club's better years come into conversation.
