The Ural Derby against HC Traktor Chelyabinsk carries more history than most KHL rivalries, going back to the Soviet Sverdlovsk teams that shared the region's ice with their Chelyabinsk counterparts long before either club took its current name. Yekaterinburg's side has worn several: Spartak until 1966, Avtomobilist through 1996, briefly Spartak again, then Dynamo-Energiya until 2006, when the Sverdlovsk Region government and the company Neolon registered the club under its present, revived name.

The lineage the Kontinental Hockey League recognises runs back to 1946, to the first USSR Championship, though the modern organisation dates its own founding to 2 June 2006. In the Soviet system the club never reached higher than fifth place in the Top League, finishing 1968-69, and made its living instead in the second tier, winning the USSR First League four times, in 1967, 1972, 1977 and 1984.

What those Soviet-era teams never managed, the KHL version came close to in 2023: a run to the Gagarin Cup semi-finals, where Avtomobilist pushed Metallurg Magnitogorsk to a seventh game before losing 3-4, and took bronze.

The team left the Uralets Arena, its home since 2006, when the UGMK Arena opened on 10 March 2025. The new ground holds 12,588 for hockey — more than double the 5,500 the old one offered.
