Arena Mytishchi holds 7,000 for hockey. Kunlun arrived in the Kontinental Hockey League in 2016, and the paperwork behind it moved fast: a protocol of intent signed in March, board approval in June, and a participation contract for the 2016–17 season signed the same month in Beijing. Playing out of Mytishchi rather than China from the outset, the club carried the name Kunlun Red Star until August 2025, when it was rebranded as the Shanghai Dragons.

On the ice, the record stayed thin. The club reached the KHL playoffs just once, in its debut season, and Metallurg Magnitogorsk ended the run in the first round, winning the series 4–1. The one trophy worth naming came earlier that same year, in the pre-season Romazan Memorial Cup, which Kunlun won in 2017.

Red, black and gold made up the club's colours from the start.
