Álvaro Fernández Carreras

Álvaro Fernández Carreras spent three years at Manchester United without a single senior appearance for the club. He came through Racing de Ferrol and then Deportivo La Coruña before Real Madrid's academy signed him as a teenager, and it was from Madrid that he crossed to Manchester United on a free transfer in September 2020.

At Preston North End in 2022–23 he made 42 appearances and was voted the club's Young Player of the Year. The following campaign split between Granada and Benfica, and after arriving in January 2024, the Portuguese club exercised an option to sign him permanently for a base fee of €6 million plus add-ons.

At Benfica, Fernández became a fixture, making 52 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals, and won the Taça da Liga in 2024–25. He was named Primeira Liga Defender of the Month for March 2025 and made the league's Team of the Year. In July 2025 the club signed him for a reported €50 million on a six-year contract, with Manchester United retaining a 20% sell-on clause from his original departure.

Internationally, he has represented Spain at Under-19 and Under-21 level, along with a single appearance for the Galicia regional side, but has yet to earn a senior cap.
