About the player
Deveron Fonville's road to NEC Nijmegen ran through the lower divisions rather than a straight line up the ladder. After coming through the youth ranks at PSV Eindhoven and then FC Utrecht, he managed only a single appearance for Jong FC Utrecht before a year on the sidelines with persistent injuries. He rebuilt his career from there, joining USV Hercules in 2023 and making 34 appearances, then moving to IJsselmeervogels in 2024, where he helped the club win the Derde Divisie title in the 2024–25 season. A brief spell at FC Dordrecht followed before NEC signed him in September 2025 for a fee that could rise to €1 million with bonuses.
Fonville, who is left-footed, represents Curaçao at international level. He made his senior debut in a friendly against Scotland, a match Curaçao lost 4-1, and has since gone on to earn further caps. He was named in Curaçao's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, his first season at NEC brought a taste of a cup final rather than silverware. He started as NEC lost the 2026 KNVB Cup Final 5-1 to AZ Alkmaar at De Kuip in Rotterdam — the club's sixth consecutive defeat in a cup final.
