About the player
Born in Geel, he passed through the youth ranks at KSAV Sint-Dimpna, KVC Westerlo and Oud-Heverlee Leuven before PSV Eindhoven picked him up in 2019. He spent three seasons with Jong PSV, making 54 appearances and scoring five goals, enough to convince Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to sign him on a free transfer in June 2023.
He was part of the side that won the 2024–25 Belgian Pro League title. His involvement was not peripheral: in the title-winning season alone he made 28 league appearances.
Leysen has also represented Belgium at every youth level from under-16 to under-21, though a senior cap has so far eluded him, despite a call-up to a preliminary squad in August 2025.
In August 2026, his career took a new turn when he moved to US Sassuolo on loan from Union Saint-Gilloise, in a deal built around a conditional obligation to buy. The package, worth around €8 million in total, includes a mechanism that turns the move permanent if Sassuolo stays in Serie A by the end of the season — at which point Leysen would sign a contract running to 2030.
