Juan David Castro Ruíz

Juan David Castro Ruíz spent more than a decade at a single club before crossing into Canadian football. He joined Atlético San Luis in July 2013 from Veracruz and stayed for over ten years, eventually becoming the club's most capped player with more than 250 appearances across all competitions. A loan spell at FC Juárez during the 2016–2017 season briefly interrupted that run, but he returned to San Luis and helped the side win the Ascenso MX title twice, in the Apertura 2018 and the Clausura 2019, securing back-to-back promotions and the club's move up to Liga MX. Through it all, he built a reputation for discipline, going through his entire professional career without a single red card. Castro joined Atlético Ottawa as a free agent in January 2025. He did not take long to make his mark: he was a key figure in the squad that won the 2025 North Star Cup, starting the final against Cavalry FC, which Ottawa won 2–1, and playing until he was substituted in the 68th minute. By 2026, his career appearance count had passed 370, with 20 goals to his name. He has never been capped by the senior Mexico national team, spending his career instead at club level.
