About the player
Jonathan Kapenga's route to Boulogne's first team ran through the club's own academy — twice. He first joined US Boulogne's youth setup at the age of 12 and stayed three years, before a season at AFC Creil and a move to Valenciennes in 2019. There he progressed through the U17 and U19 ranks and captained the U17 side during the 2019–2020 season, though he never made a senior appearance for the club. He said in a 2020 interview that he had trained with the Valenciennes U19s but had not been called up to the France Espoirs or any other national youth level.
He left Valenciennes as a free agent in July 2023 and spent a season with JA Drancy's B team in Championnat National 3. On 9 July 2024, Kapenga returned to Boulogne, the club where his football education began, initially joining the reserve side, US Boulogne B. In July 2025 he was promoted to the senior squad in Ligue 2, signing a contract running to June 2027.
The defender, born in Beauvais, plays as a right-footed centre-back and wears the number 4 shirt. His entire transfer history has been built on free moves and internal promotions rather than fees.
