About the player
Justin Hammel started out at FC Oberwil before moving through BSC Old Boys and into Basel's academy, where he spent three years with FC Basel II and made three senior appearances. A move to FC Stade Lausanne-Ouchy in September 2020 gave him a proper run of first-team football, and he made 50 appearances there before Grasshopper Club Zürich signed him on a free transfer in June 2022.
At Grasshoppers the goalkeeper has become a fixture, passing 119 appearances for the club. The 2023/24 season stands out: fans voted him their Player of the Season, and he backed that up by taking the Player of the Month award in four separate months, December, January, February and March, as the campaign went on.
Hammel has also had a taste of international football, earning three caps for Switzerland's under-21 side between 2021 and 2023. Right-footed and standing at 185cm, he has built his career on steady progress through the Swiss game rather than a single defining move.
