About the player
Kotaro Kishi is the first Japanese player in the history of the Kazakhstan Premier League. He joined Ulytau in June 2025, and his first season there has already brought two league goals and one in the Kazakhstan Cup, the most memorable a solo goal against FC Ereymentau.
The route to Kazakhstan ran through Europe. Kishi came through Sakuyo High School and then Tokoha University Hamamatsu Campus, where he played in the Japanese university league. In January 2023 he turned professional with Lija Athletic in Malta and made his debut in the BOV Challenge League. He scored in games against Fgura United and Qrendi during that spell.
In February 2024 he moved to Montenegro to join Mornar Bar in the First League. The 2024/25 season was his fullest there: 34 league appearances, five goals and one assist. He also scored once in the Montenegrin Cup and played in UEFA Conference League qualifying, in ties against Radnički 1923 and Dinamo Tbilisi.
He has not yet played for the Japan senior national team.
