About the player
Leander Øy was 15 when Sarpsborg 08 scouts noticed him at IL Jotun, his local club in Årdal. In the summer of 2019 he moved across the country to join the club's youth setup, and he attended St. Olav Upper Secondary School while working through the junior ranks.
The step up was gradual. He signed his first professional contract on 30 August 2021 and made his senior debut for Sarpsborg 08 in July 2022.
Øy had already been part of Norway's youth teams for several years by then, with call-ups at G15 level in 2018 and G16 in 2019, followed by the U19s in 2021. He made his Norway U21 debut in June 2023 against Scotland. He was in the U21 squad again in 2024 and has won two caps at that level. He has not been capped by the senior national side.
In March 2025 he left for Mjøndalen IF on loan, under the national loan scheme for young players. The move was first announced for the opening half of the season. On 6 June 2025 Mjøndalen confirmed that the arrangement had been extended to cover the rest of the year, with the agreement running until 31 December 2025.
Sarpsborg 08 hold his contract.
