About the player
Leon Chiwome's breakthrough came at speed. The Guardian had already flagged him in September 2022 as one of the league's outstanding first-year scholars.
His form for England's youth sides underlined the promise. Chiwome scored a hat-trick against Germany at Under-17 level in January 2023 and went on to play at that year's European Under-17 Championship, later adding caps and a goal for the Under-18s as England won the Pinatar Super Cup. Zimbabwe, the country of his family's heritage, called him into the senior squad in November 2023, though he did not feature in that camp.
The setback came in January 2025: a ruptured cruciate ligament that ended his season. The move has yet to produce a goal — six League Two appearances and one EFL Cup outing for Colchester so far, without finding the net.
