Liam Donnelly’s footballing identity is defined more by longevity than fleeting brilliance. After a high-profile youth career in England, he found his footing in the Scottish game, eventually settling at St Mirren. His journey from the Dungannon Swifts academy to the senior ranks involves a distinct pivot in his playing style that reshaped his career.

Donnelly arrived at the Fulham Academy in 2012, quickly establishing himself as a leader. He captained the youth side to the 2014 FA Youth Cup final, a moment that remains a highlight of his development in England. A loan spell at Crawley Town followed, but it was his time at Hartlepool United that provided consistency. He made 60 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and proving his reliability in the lower tiers of English football.

The move to Motherwell marked a significant evolution. In the 2019–20 season, he transitioned from defence to midfield.

International recognition arrived early. Donnelly made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in June 2014 against Chile. He holds the record for the most U21 caps for his country, earning 24 appearances between 2012 and 2018 while captaining the side. These figures underscore his standing among his peers during his formative years.

He signed a two-year contract with St Mirren in June 2025 after three years at Kilmarnock. The move represents a new chapter for the right-footed midfielder.

His path has not been linear. Moving from Northern Ireland to England, then to Scotland, required adaptation. The shift from a defensive position to midfield at Motherwell demonstrated his versatility. At St Mirren, he brings a mix of English and Scottish experience to the squad.
