Matheus Reis de Lima

Matheus Reis de Lima's career has run almost entirely outside Brazil. Born in São João da Boa Vista, he came up through CSU/DER in his hometown before joining São Paulo FC's academy in 2008, and after a loan spell at Atlético Sorocaba he was promoted to São Paulo's first team in 2015. A loan at Bahia in 2017 brought him a Copa do Nordeste winner's medal, but it was a further loan, to Moreirense in Portugal in 2018, that redirected his career: that summer he signed permanently for Rio Ave on a free transfer, and stayed with the club until 2021.

The move that defined him came in January 2021, when Sporting CP took him on loan from Rio Ave; the deal was made permanent that July, again as a free transfer, after his Rio Ave contract expired. At Sporting he became a regular left-back and a decorated one, winning three Primeira Liga titles, in 2020–21, 2023–24 and 2024–25, as well as the Taça de Portugal in 2024–25 and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2021. He was named Primeira Liga Defender of the Month in both February and March 2022, was picked in the league's Team of the Year for 2020–21, and took the Goal of the Month award in February 2023.

Reis holds a Portuguese passport and has said he would be open to representing Portugal, though he has not been capped by that country, nor by Brazil at senior or youth level. In February 2026, after his Sporting contract was terminated early, he signed for CSKA Moscow on a free transfer, agreeing terms until June 2029 with an option to extend.
