About the player
Fredrikstad paid 8 million kronor for Max Nilsson in February 2026, a fee of roughly €750,000–€800,000, and gave the Swedish midfielder a contract that runs to the end of 2030. It was a sizeable step for a player who had grown up in the small town of Osby.
Nilsson began at IFK Osby, the club he counts as his mother club, and stayed there until 2019. His route to the Norwegian Eliteserien went through Landskrona BoIS, whom he joined on a free transfer in January 2023.
At Landskrona he played in both of the country's top two divisions. The team was in the Superettan in 2023, moved up to the Allsvenskan in 2024 and was back in the Superettan in 2025. That gave him a season in Sweden's top flight before he left for Norway.
At Fredrikstad he plays in central midfield. In the 2026 season he has made around 15 or 16 appearances, scoring twice and setting up one goal. Those numbers are modest, but they come from a first year in a new country and a new league.
