About the player
Melvin Mastil's route to the Algeria squad ran through the Swiss lower divisions. Signed in July 2021 as the club's third-choice goalkeeper, he spent two seasons with the reserves before going out on loan, first to FC Biel-Bienne in the Promotion League and then, for two seasons running, to FC Stade Nyonnais in the Challenge League. It was at Nyonnais that the Swiss Association of Football Players named him the Challenge League's best goalkeeper for 2025–2026 and placed him in the division's Team of the Season.
Mastil made his international debut in March 2026, starting in a friendly against Guatemala in Genoa and keeping a clean sheet as Algeria won 7–0. A second cap followed against Bolivia. Petković then included him among four goalkeepers named in Algeria's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Born in Thonon-les-Bains, Mastil came through the youth ranks at FC Échichens before a spell with Foot Région Morges, then returned to Échichens for his senior debut. From there he moved through FC Azzurri LS 90 and FC Échallens on free transfers before Lausanne signed him, later extending his contract to 2029. At 194cm, his Challenge League award and World Cup selection have come without a senior title yet to his name.
