The Fennecs, as they're known, moved into the Nelson Mandela Stadium at Baraki in 2023.

The federation was founded on 21 October 1962, weeks after independence. Algeria joined FIFA in January 1964 and played its first official international that same year. The record since then has run in patches: a runners-up finish at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, third place twice in the 1980s, and then a long wait before the title finally arrived in 1990 on home soil. A second Cup of Nations followed in 2019, with Riyad Mahrez, that year's best player, lifting it as captain.

The team's single most replayed moment predates both trophies: the 2–1 win over the reigning world champions West Germany at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, still cited whenever the conversation turns to shocks in the group stage. Islam Slimani has since become the side's all-time leading scorer, with 46 goals, though the deepest World Cup run remains 2014, when Algeria topped its group before losing to Germany in extra time in the last 16.

Five World Cup appearances have produced that one knockout-stage exit and nothing further. The Maghreb Derby against Tunisia carries the sharpest edge of the team's rivalries, but a first World Cup victory beyond the group phase is still the one line missing from the record.
