Okafor Refuses Switzerland Duty Under Yakin

Noah Okafor says he will not play for Switzerland again while Murat Yakin remains head coach, citing a breakdown in trust rather than any complaint about playing time.

The Leeds United Forward announced the decision on Instagram on Thursday. "My decision has nothing to do with my playing time," he wrote. "Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept. When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply. In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager."

The Algeria match he refers to was Switzerland's last-16 win at the World Cup, where he came off the bench for 19 minutes. It was his only involvement in the tournament; Yakin left him out entirely at Euro 2024. Okafor has 26 caps since his debut in 2019, but by his own account the grievance sits with how he has been treated, not with minutes on the pitch.

He was not without praise for Yakin, telling Voetbal International the coach "does good work and has achieved something historic with Switzerland," a reference to that World Cup quarter-final run. "But I see no foundation for the coming years," he added.

The Swiss federation confirmed it had been informed and does not intend to intervene. "We Respect his decision and wish him every success with his club," a spokesperson said. Switzerland open their 2026-27 Nations League campaign away to North Macedonia on 26 September, and will do so without Okafor.

Okafor joined Leeds from AC Milan for £18m last August. Yakin has been in charge of the national side since August 2021.

A stand-off of this kind rarely ends with a swift return; it will likely take a change of coach, not a change of heart, to bring Okafor back into the fold.
