The National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka holds 60,000, though when the schedule calls for it Zambia move east to the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The Football Association of Zambia traces back to 1929, when the territory still played under the name Northern Rhodesia and took the field for the first time in 1946. Independence in 1964 brought the change to Zambia, and with it entry into FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.

Nothing in that history carries the weight of 2012. Zambia beat Ivory Coast on penalties, 8–7 after a goalless final, to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the only time. Zambia had reached the final again the following year, in 1994, and lost to Nigeria with a team rebuilt in the crash's shadow.
