About the player
Othmane Maamma scored a bicycle kick against Brazil at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and Morocco's under-20 side went on to win the tournament. Maamma was awarded the Golden Ball.
He was born in Alès in southern France and started at Gazelec Sportif Gardois, where he stayed from 2011 to 2015. A year at AC Arlésien followed before he joined Montpellier in 2016. He came through the club's academy and played for the reserve side, Montpellier B, from 2022 to 2025: 28 appearances and eight goals. His first-team appearances began in 2023. He played 14 matches for the senior squad and scored twice.
In July 2025 he moved to Watford on a four-year contract running to 2029. The club did not announce a fee. Some reports put it at around £1 million. He plays on the right wing or through the middle.
His route into international football runs through Morocco's youth teams. He has been a leading figure for the under-20s, and the World Cup gave him his largest stage to date. He has not yet made a senior appearance for Morocco. He was, however, included in a preliminary list for the 2026 World Cup squad.
