About the player
Sambou Soumano's route to Ligue 2 football ran through three loan spells before he made himself Lorient's man. Born in Dakar, he came through Elite Foot in Senegal before moving to France, first with Pau's reserve side, then Châteaubriant in National 2, where his form persuaded Lorient to sign him in August 2021. He started in the club's reserve team before working his way into the first XI.
Lorient sent him to KAS Eupen in Belgium, then to Rodez, and finally to Quevilly-Rouen Métropole for the 2023-24 season, where he scored 12 goals in 36 league appearances.
Returning to Lorient for 2024-25, Soumano scored 14 goals in Ligue 2.
Off the pitch, a moment of controversy arrived in early 2025 when a post criticising the Senegal national team for overlooking him appeared on his Instagram account. He has not been capped by Senegal at senior level.
He later left Lorient on a free transfer to join Stade de Reims on a four-year contract, taking the number 99 shirt.
