About the player
Timi Max Elšnik was born in Ptuj. He came through Derby County's academy after joining as a teenager, and rather than breaking straight into the first team he was sent out to learn the game at Swindon Town, Mansfield Town and Northampton Town. Derby released him in the summer of 2019, and he returned home, joining Olimpija Ljubljana on a free transfer in January 2020.
That move reshaped his career. Elšnik became captain at Olimpija, and the club won the Slovenian PrvaLiga title in 2022–23 as well as the Slovenian Cup twice. He made his senior Slovenia debut in 2021 and, eventually, started in all four of Slovenia's matches at Euro 2024. He scored his first senior international goal in a friendly win over Portugal in March 2024, a game he later joked about sending Cristiano Ronaldo "back to the hotel."
His performances at Olimpija also caught the eye of Red Star Belgrade, who signed him in July 2024 for a fee reported in Serbian media at around €1.5 million. He has established himself as a regular starter in Belgrade, featuring in Champions League fixtures against Benfica and Barcelona and providing two assists in a 3–3 draw with Partizan in the Belgrade derby in February 2025.
