Tom Smith

Colchester United goalkeeper Tom Smith spent thirteen years in the Arsenal academy before it ended in 2023, having joined as an eight-year-old in 2010 and signed his first professional contract in December 2019. That grounding included a Premier League South title with Arsenal's under-18 side in the 2018–19 season.

Those loans took him through non-league and lower-league football in stages: a brief work-experience stint at Salisbury without appearing in a match, a run of games at Dover Athletic, a season at Welling United, and then a season-long loan at Bromley in 2022/23 in which he made 13 appearances. It was a move to Colchester United in January 2023, initially on loan, that changed his trajectory. Smith kept clean sheets in each of his first three appearances for the club, a run no Colchester goalkeeper had managed in over twenty years. Arsenal released him that summer, and Colchester moved quickly to sign him permanently on a two-year deal, later extending his contract in May 2025 to run until June 2026.

Smith has combined his football career with academic study, completing an economics degree at the London School of Economics, for which he was named the Premier League's Academy Alumni of the Year – Beyond the Pitch in 2025. On the international stage, his representative honours amount to a single England under-16 cap, earned in a friendly against Brazil under-16 in January 2018.
