About the player
Yaël Mouanga Boudzoumou's path to Ligue 1 ran through Bordeaux's academy, where he signed on as a schoolboy before National 3 football with the reserve side gave him twenty-five appearances to build on. His only senior outing for the Girondins came as a substitute in a 4–2 defeat to Concarneau.
Montpellier picked him up on a free transfer. The move paid off faster than most would have expected: with the club hit by an injury crisis in defence, he was handed a start against Toulouse and made his Ligue 1 debut in a 3–0 loss. Since then he has established himself as a regular starter.
Born in Créteil, Mouanga holds dual French and Congolese citizenship, leaving him eligible to represent either nation, though he has not yet earned a senior cap for France or the Republic of the Congo. Right-footed and suited to the centre of defence.
