The Palancas Negras took the youth nickname straight from the senior team, along with the red shirts and black shorts, and they have carried it since 1983, when Angola first entered the African Youth Championship, the competition now known as the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. The title itself came only once, in 2001, and it did more than fill a trophy cabinet: it sent Angola to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, where the side reached the round of 16.

Since then the pattern has been near misses rather than repeats. Angola finished runners-up at the continental U-20 finals in 1995, 2015 and 2019, and took third in 2017. Regionally, in the COSAFA U-20 Championship, the title has never come at all, despite finals appearances in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2011 and third-place finishes stretching from 2004 through to 2025. South Africa and Zambia have been the sides standing in the way most often when the tournament reaches its knockout stages.

Home matches are shared with the senior national team rather than held at a ground of their own, split between the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, which holds around 50,000, and the smaller Estádio da Cidadela. Through the Federação Angolana de Futebol, the age group remains what it was in 1983: the route through which players like Mona start out before Angola's senior colours ever come into view.
