Progress past the opening round has become rare rather than expected, and the quarter-final run of 2002 — reached only because Madagascar withdrew from their group, before a 7–1 hiding from hosts South Africa ended it — remains the one time the side got past that stage in the tournament's knockout phase.

The bulk of what the team has to show for itself dates back further, to a run of third-place finishes at the COSAFA U-20 Youth Championship in 1985, 1986, 1990 and 1993, the first of those coming on home soil. Nothing since has matched it, and a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup has never followed.

Home games are played at the Somhlolo National Stadium in Lobamba, under the eye of the Eswatini Football Association, known until a recent renaming as the National Football Association of Swaziland. That body's founding in 1968, ten years before it joined FIFA, is where the story of this junior side, nicknamed Sihlangu Semnikati — the King's Shield — begins.
