That side, dated to 1986, has produced players who moved through its ranks before playing for senior clubs — Tumelo Khutlang played for Black Leopards and Moroka Swallows, while Motlalepula Mofolo went on to Orlando Pirates after coming through the same age group.

The record in the COSAFA U-20 Championship reads as a story of getting close and not quite getting there. Lesotho reached the final three times — in 1990, losing to Zimbabwe; in 2005, losing to Madagascar; and in 2017, losing to South Africa.

Continental football has been harder to reach consistently: Lesotho qualified for the African youth championship in 2005, when it was held in Benin, and again in 2011, in South Africa, but in 2014 they withdrew from qualifying altogether, with Ebola spreading through the region at the time.
